Tata Power To Set Up 10,000 Cr Solar Ingot And Wafer Plant In Odisha
10 GW project aims to deepen domestic solar manufacturing and support clean energy supply chains
Tata Power Company plans to set up a 10-gigawatt ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Odisha with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, adding a key upstream link to India’s solar value chain.
Ingots and wafers are core raw materials for producing solar cells and modules, as well as semiconductor chips. The proposed unit is intended to support both domestic deployment of solar power and export markets.
The company currently has 4.55 GW of solar cell and module manufacturing capacity. The new project is aimed at backward integrating into ingots and wafers to feed its cell and panel lines, strengthening India’s ability to localise more of the clean energy supply chain.
Tata Power is evaluating two possible sites for the plant, Gopalpur in Ganjam district and Cuttack, both offering proximity to a port, which is critical for import of equipment and export of finished products.
The facility, once operational, is expected to support India’s energy transition by expanding the supply of domestically produced solar components, reducing dependence on imports and enabling scale-up of renewable power deployment in line with national decarbonisation goals.
