UP Establishes Its First Green Hydrogen Plant In Gorakhpur

Torrent Group facility to blend hydrogen with CNG, PNG for cleaner household fuel
Gorakhpur has become home to Uttar Pradesh’s first green hydrogen plant with the inauguration of a facility set up by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas at Khanipur village near Khajni block. The project, only the second of its kind in the country, is expected to cut carbon emissions and boost adoption of clean energy in the state.
The plant will blend hydrogen with compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) to provide households with cleaner cooking fuel. The development builds on Torrent’s existing CNG unit in the city, positioning Gorakhpur as a hub for low-carbon energy solutions.
Officials said the project would help protect the environment, improve public health and foster innovation in the energy sector. Uttar Pradesh’s abundant water resources are also expected to support future expansion of green hydrogen production.
Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable power. Industry experts see it as a critical fuel for the energy transition, with applications ranging from powering homes and industries to reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.
