Uttar Pradesh Deepens Green Energy Ties With Japan

State delegation explores green hydrogen partnerships, tech transfer to boost clean energy innovation
Uttar Pradesh is stepping up its clean energy ambitions through strategic international partnerships, with a high-level delegation currently visiting Japan to explore collaborations in green hydrogen, renewable energy, and advanced mobility solutions.
Led by Awanish Awasthi, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, the delegation includes Vijay Kiran Anand, CEO of Invest UP, and Inderjit Singh, Director of the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). The team is holding a series of meetings with Japanese industry leaders, researchers, and clean energy institutions to accelerate the state’s green energy roadmap.
A key highlight of the visit was an interaction focused on Toyota’s Mirai, a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle that emits only water. The vehicle represents the type of zero-emission technology Uttar Pradesh hopes to promote as it moves toward cleaner mobility solutions.
“We are keen to partner with global institutions and private players in building capacity around hydrogen, solar, and biomass energy. This mission is about learning and bringing back technologies that can be adapted locally,” said Inderjit Singh, Director, UPNEDA.
The delegation also visited the University of Yamanashi’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center, a globally renowned research hub in advanced fuel cell technology, where discussions were held on establishing Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Uttar Pradesh to drive R&D in clean energy and mobility.
The state government is also exploring potential technology transfer agreements and investments in green hydrogen production, aiming to establish Uttar Pradesh as a future-ready clean energy manufacturing and innovation hub. The delegation highlighted the state’s commitment to scaling solar, biomass, and small hydroelectric projects as part of its energy diversification goals.
Other notable visits included the NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant, the Suntory Hakushu Distillery—which showcases Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology—and the Hydrogen Research Center in Yamanashi, where the team studied applications of green hydrogen across industries.
These engagements come amid India’s broader climate commitments and reflect Uttar Pradesh’s intent to align with national goals on net-zero emissions, sustainable development, and energy security.
“We want Uttar Pradesh to emerge as a key player in India’s green transition—creating jobs, attracting clean tech investments, and building local innovation capacity in renewable energy,” said Vijay Kiran Anand, CEO, Invest UP.
With its push for international collaboration and clean technology adoption, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a frontrunner in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
