Uttar Pradesh, Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture To Collaborate On Green Hydrogen

The proposed Centre aims to promote research, innovation, and industrial application of hydrogen technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision
In a move aimed at strengthening India’s clean energy transition, the Government of Uttar Pradesh is working with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for an Innovative and Integrated Ecosystem on Green Hydrogen. The proposed centre will serve as a collaborative platform for research, technology development, and industrial application of green hydrogen in partnership with academia and industry.
A high-level virtual meeting between officials from Invest UP, the University of Yamanashi, and the Yamanashi Prefecture Government was held to discuss the framework for the CoE. The discussions focused on developing a roadmap for advancing hydrogen-based clean energy research, fostering innovation, and creating scalable technologies. Both sides agreed to reconvene soon to finalise the implementation plan.
The proposed CoE will bring together experts from leading Indian institutions and co-opted faculty from technical universities. The University of Yamanashi will serve as the technology partner, while several industry stakeholders and start-ups—four of whom have already expressed interest—are expected to participate in prototyping, testing, and pilot-scale deployment.
Key areas of focus will include hydrogen generation, storage, and distribution systems, renewable energy-based microgrids, and techno-economic analysis of the hydrogen value chain. The centre is also expected to provide training and research opportunities to support industrial decarbonisation and sustainable development.
Officials said the initiative would contribute to deepening Indo-Japan collaboration in clean energy, strengthen technology indigenisation, and promote entrepreneurship within India’s growing hydrogen economy. With policy backing and an expanding renewable ecosystem, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a key hub for innovation and leadership in green hydrogen and sustainable technologies.
