We Must Learn How To Adapt, Without Facing Threat Of Extinction: ISRO Chief
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief stressed the importance of individual efforts to combat climate change. Speaking at an event on ‘Climate change: Science, projections, and climate action’, held by Atria University, he has thrown light on how small-scale efforts to combat climate change can significantly impact the environment.
He also warned against the over-exploitation of natural resources, especially for personal gain. However, he also highlighted that climate change is a natural process that cannot be eliminated.
“We must learn how to adapt to these changes and live in a way that allows us to continue thriving without facing the threat of extinction,” Somanath stated.
Earlier in a different event in Chennai Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S. Somanath also emphasised the crucial role of space technology in promoting sustainability and effective governance. He highlighted the significance of ISRO’s fleet of nearly 50 satellites in providing vital data for various applications.
Somanath stressed the need for increased deployment of earth observation, monitoring, and data support satellites to address India’s unique challenges. He encouraged NGOs, businesses, and other stakeholders to collaborate with ISRO in harnessing the potential of space-based data.
“Various problems that we face today are primarily related to agriculture, productivity, planning, land resources and utilisation, weather and climate change, and how we can support modelling and prediction. We believe that space technology can bring a synoptic view of these issues to the community, decision-makers, and scientists,” he said.
