Zomato Starts ‘Greening India’ Project To Mark 17 Years, Targets 25 Lakh Trees On Farmlands

The initiative covers 10,000 acres and aims to remove 1.5 million tonne of CO₂ over three decades
Zomato has started a new sustainability initiative titled ‘Greening India’ as part of its 17th anniversary, aiming to plant 2.5 million (25 lakh) trees across 10,000 acres of farmland in India over the next year.
According to a statement shared by founder Deepinder Goyal, the project is designed to contribute to long-term carbon removal—an estimated 1.5 million tonne of CO₂ over the next 30 years—and supplement farmers’ income through land partnerships.
The company has so far partnered with over 2,000 farmers for plantation activities on more than 4,500 acres spread across Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab.
Greening India is part of Zomato’s broader environmental and social initiatives, following earlier programme such as Feeding India. The company has also reported efforts to reduce emissions in its logistics operations. As of now, over 50,000 delivery partners across Zomato and Blinkit use electric vehicles, contributing to a reported 10 per cent reduction in per-kilometre emissions since 2022.
Additionally, Zomato states that it has maintained carbon neutrality for all food deliveries over the past three years through the purchase of carbon credits from clean energy projects in India.
Further scale-up of the Greening India initiative will depend on the outcomes of its first phase.
